Comprehensive Drug Screening
Pre Employment Check

Pre Employment Drug Testing

Identify potential drug users before they cost your business.

Pre employment drug testing involves screening job candidates for illegal substances or abuse of prescription medications prior to their hiring. This process aims to:

  • Ensure Safety: Reduce workplace accidents and incidents related to substance abuse.
    Enhance
  • Productivity: Identify candidates who are more likely to disrupt the work environment due to drug use.
  • Maintain Reputation: Uphold a positive image by maintaining a professional and safe work culture.
  • Reduce Turnover: Investing in pre-employment drug testing can result in lower turnover rates, minimising the costs associated with hiring and training new employees.

When coupled with a clear policy discussion, it explains expected behaviours and standards from the start.

Types of Pre Employment Drug Tests

The type of drug test you use will depend on the period of time you are screening for, for example, immediately after an accident or incident (short time frame) or as part of the hiring process to establish lifestyle use (longer time frame). Hair and nail tests are typically used for pre-employment screening.

Hair Testing

Unlike other drug testing methods, hair strand testing has a longer detection window, allowing for the assessment of an individual’s drug use history – up to 12 months. It’s not used to detect one-off usage. It’s useful when employers want to understand an individual’s substance use history.

Fingernail Testing

A great alternative when hair is compromised because it has been chemically altered. It’s also an option for those who don’t have hair hair, or hair long enough to be tested. Fingernails provide approximately 6 months of detection, while toenails provide around 12 months.

Best Practices for Implementing Pre Employment Drug Testing

Establish a Clear Policy

Make sure all workplace drug testing procedures are outlined in a comprehensive policy that explains their purpose, process, and consequences. It is common for workplace policies to include a variety of drug tests, including random drug testing, post-incident testing, clearance testing, and reasonable cause testing where employee impairment is suspected. Several high-risk industries, such as transportation and construction, require mandatory testing to ensure workplace safety. Your workplace policy should be outlined to all candidates.

Maintain Confidentiality

Respect candidates’ privacy by handling all testing results confidentially. Use results solely for their intended purpose.
